What is Access to Work (AtW)

AtW is government money that comes from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) via Jobcentre Plus.

The purpose of AtW is to provide grants for practical support in the workplace.

You may be entitled to AtW if you are:

  • in a paid job
  • unemployed and about to start a new job
  • unemployed and about start a Work Trial
  • self-employed
  • Applying for a job (Job Interview)

and… if you have certain health conditions, or you’re a Deaf or disabled individual, and your health condition, your disability or being Deaf means there are parts of your job you can’t do you may find you’re not affected much (or at all!) by your health condition or disability as you do your job on a day-to-day basis.

However, if your disability or health condition could have a long-term effect on how well you can do your job, this is taken into consideration when you apply for AtW.

What can AtW be used for?

AtW can be used to pay for any support you need to be able to do all parts of your job. Examples of the kind of practical support many people need are:

  • Travel to and from work support
  • Equipment
  • BSL interpreters
  • Note-takers
  • Support workers
  • Reader/guides
  • Job coaches
  • Travel buddies
  • Personal assistants
